Solar Shingles & Solar Panels in Dallas, TX
Most solar roofs look like panels bolted on top of an old roof. StazOn Roofing gives Dallas homeowners a choice: integrated solar shingles that sit flush with the rest of the roof, or high-efficiency solar panels mounted over a new, leak-free roof system. We are a GAF Master Elite roofing contractor AND a licensed master electrician in Texas (License 559388) — one company handles the entire job, roofing and electrical, with one warranty and one phone number.

What Is the Difference Between Solar Shingles and Solar Panels?
Both turn sunlight into electricity. The difference is how they sit on the roof.
- Solar Shingles — Photovoltaic cells built into a shingle that installs with standard roofing nails. No rails, no brackets, no roof penetrations. From the street you see a continuous roof, not panels bolted on top.
- Solar Panels — The classic rack-mounted system on rails above the roof. Higher efficiency per square foot and generally lower cost per watt.
- Integrated look — solar shingles sit flush with the roof plane; panels stand above it.
- One roof, one material — solar shingles replace the roof itself; panels go on top of an existing or new roof.
- Better for shade — modern solar shingle and panel arrays handle partial shading better than older string designs.
- Ideal for HOAs — shingles pair well with Lakewood, Park Cities, and Frisco neighborhoods where protruding panels are restricted.
- Solar-ready roofing matters — the roof under the system has to be sound, flashed correctly, and warrantied.
Either way, solar-ready roofing matters. The roof under the system has to be sound, flashed correctly, and warrantied — which is exactly what a Master Elite roofing contractor brings.

Why Does Solar Installation Require an Electrician — and Does StazOn Have One?
Yes. This is one of the biggest differentiators between StazOn and other roofing contractors offering solar.
When the roofing contractor also handles the electrical, one warranty covers both — roof and solar. Leak in the roof? One call. Inverter fault? One call. Production drop in year 8? One call.
Master Electrician License 559388
$150-400 per shingle depending on pitch and accessibility. Steep and two-story roofs cost more because setup takes longer.
Licensed Electrical Contractor
$250-600 per penetration. A chimney with failed step flashing and counterflashing is more involved than a single vent pipe boot.
Battery Backup Ready
$400-1,200 depending on valley length and whether underlayment needs replacement.
One Warranty, One Company
$175-350. The part is cheap; the labor is accessing it without damaging the surrounding shingles.
Grid Interconnection
$500-1,200 depending on skylight brand and accessibility.
- Master Electrician License Texas 559388 — StazOn holds a state master electrician license, so we legally connect solar systems to your home’s electrical panel and the grid. Many roofers hire a third-party electrician, adding delays and finger-pointing, or worse, do the electrical work unlicensed.
- Licensed electrical contractor: our license covers the business entity and lets us pull electrical permits in most DFW municipalities.
- Battery backup: ask us about a battery system (Tesla Powerwall, Enphase, etc.) so a grid-tied system keeps powering your home during outages.

How Much Do Solar Shingles or Solar Panels Cost in Dallas?
Solar costs depend on the system you choose. Here is the DFW math, before the 30% federal tax credit:
Solar Shingle Cost
If your asphalt shingle roof is under 10 years old with localized damage, repair is almost always the right call. If it's 18+ years old with granule loss across the entire roof, replacement costs more now but saves you from chasing leaks for the next 2-3 years.
Solar Panel Cost
A single leak around a chimney is a repair. Leaks in three different rooms are a pattern. When cumulative repair approaches replacement cost, replacement comes with a GAF warranty that covers the entire roof for decades.
Federal Tax Credit
If a storm caused the damage and you have replacement cost coverage, your insurance may cover full replacement. StazOn handles the claim process from inspection to final payment. You pay your deductible and get a new roof.
Roof-First Thinking
If it can be repaired, we repair it. If replacement is the smarter long-term decision, we tell you straight.
Honest Recommendation
Only 2% of roofing contractors qualify. Our repairs and replacements meet manufacturer standards, preserving your warranty.
- Solar shingles: roughly $4.50-6.00 per watt installed. A 5 kW system lands around $22,500-30,000 before credit.
- Solar panels: roughly $2.50-3.50 per watt installed. The same 5 kW system is about $12,500-17,500 before credit.
- The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit covers 30% of the full system cost — shingles or panels, inverter, wiring, and labor — with no cap.
- The hidden cost both share: the roof underneath. A rack-mounted install on a failing roof means penetrations that become leak points, and a re-roof later costs thousands in panel removal and reinstall. Roof-first thinking — replacing the roof while solar goes up — is almost always cheaper.
- Best value: solar makes the most financial sense when you need a new roof anyway. If your roof is 15+ years old, installing solar as part of the re-roof eliminates a second crew and a second schedule.
StazOn gives you honest pricing for both options and a straight recommendation based on your roof condition, energy goals, and budget — not on what is more profitable for us.

What Our Clients Say
Posted on Google Jarrod KennedyJuly 17, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent company. Professional and knowledgeable. StazOn Roofing really takes care of business. Most impressed with the rapid response for change orders/add ons. They crank out custom metal anything we used lots of flashings / door pans / chimney cap / etc… way beyond the roof. Best looking gutter job I have ever seen… same high quality material as roof. The roof just a work of art. Paul and Justin deliver high quality work and care about the customer. I don’t often recommend however these guys are a top notch organization so one must. Thanks You!!!! - JarrodPosted on Google Jessica MossDecember 11, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great service great people. Wonderful company!!! Easy to work with.Posted on Google Richie & Tasha KeeneAugust 21, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We've relied upon StazOn Roofing for help identifying/repairing a leak in our roof, and other minor repairs. Lewelen is always professional/courteous to work with in scheduling the work, and Raul shows up on-time, is efficient and the work he has performed is top-notch. StazOn will continue to be our go-to roofing expert!Posted on Google Daniel TossettiJuly 25, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We've worked with StazOn for nearly a decade between this house and our last house. They are always super professional, organized, and friendly. We decided to splurge and put a standing-seam metal roof on our mid-century-inspired house and I couldn't be more happy with the results. All of the pieces were custom-fabricated and the installation was smooth, clean, and executed with care. I highly recommend working with StazOn.Posted on Google Dave RandallJuly 21, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had StazOn roofing install a new roof on our house. The supervisor Justin showed up with his crew very early. Workers pretty much worked nonstop for close to 12 hours. From the time of Justin giving us the estimate things went well. He gave us the choice of materials to be used with no pressure I had already kind of decided on GAF Timberline HDZ shingles and StazOn highly recommended GAF. The warranty with the shingles was one of the best too. I am 80 and I have to say the transaction with this company has been very satisfying and pleasant. The workmanship was top notch and the cleanup was great.Posted on Google Peter B BartholowMay 20, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Person who made repairs on steep tile roof is extremely knowledgeable, careful and efficient. I would definitely recommend highly for either repairs or new roof installation. Paul is great to work with for timely response, logical approach to billing and help with different problems.Posted on Google Max LevyFebruary 23, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. As an architect it has become very difficult these days to find talented, dedicated, reliable subcontractors. StazOn on the other hand checks all these boxes. They not only routinely execute challenging design details well, they often make suggestions that actually improve the details. Additionally, I’ve rarely had a punchlist item for them to take care of on any of our projects. They are quite rare. Hire them!Posted on Google B Glazer RosenblattFebruary 21, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. They do beautiful work that is respectful of the historic architectual design of our home! They are also incredibly responsive and timely when it comes to any repairs. A joy to work with and reasonably priced!Posted on Google John PollockNovember 27, 2023Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very good company. I have used them twice in a 5 year period. Once on my old house (Full roof) and again on my new house which was a repair. They are honest, prompt to reply and ON TIME! Justin is a very solid guy and I strongly recommend this company.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Do solar shingles or panels work during a Texas power outage?
A: Not by default. Grid-tied systems shut off during outages for utility worker safety. Adding a battery backup system (Tesla Powerwall, Enphase, etc.) lets your solar roof keep powering your home during blackouts. StazOn installs the battery system as part of your solar installation.
Will solar shingles hold up to DFW hail?
A: Quality solar shingles are Class 3 or Class 4 impact rated, built to survive the hailstones DFW actually sees — 1.75-inch and up. The tempered glass on solar shingles is more impact-resistant than the glass on traditional rack-mounted panels. Panels can be protected with perimeter shielding on severe-hail roofs.
How long does a solar installation take?
A: A typical residential install runs 3-5 days for the roofing portion, plus 1-2 days for electrical work and grid interconnection — about 1-2 weeks from start to power generation. Because there is no separate racking step, solar shingle roofs are often faster than panel systems.
Can solar be installed on an existing roof?
A: Panels can go on an existing roof, but we recommend doing solar as part of a roof replacement or over a new solar-ready roof. Solar shingles integrate with the surrounding roofing, and a roof that is 15+ years old will need replacing while your new system still has decades of life. Replacing the roof and adding solar in one project is the best value.
Does StazOn handle the utility interconnection paperwork?
A: Yes. We handle the entire process — Oncor interconnection application, net metering enrollment with your retail electric provider, city electrical permit, and final inspection. You do not file paperwork. We do.
Are solar shingles and panels eligible for the federal tax credit?
A: Yes. Both qualify for the 30% federal Residential Clean Energy Credit. The credit applies to the full system cost — solar shingles or panels, inverter, wiring, and installation labor. There is no cap on the credit amount.
How does solar affect my Texas homeowners insurance?
A: Most Texas carriers do not increase premiums for integrated solar shingles because they are classified as roofing material, not a separate mounted system. Rack-mounted panels sometimes draw a premium due to wind-lift risk. Confirm with your carrier, but for most DFW homeowners we have installed for, solar shingles mean no premium change.
