Tile roofing in Texas means weight, water, and heat. Clay and concrete tile sheds the Dallas sun, handles hail, and lasts 50 to 100 years. But it’s heavy — and the structure underneath has to carry it. StazOn Roofing has installed and repaired tile roofs across DFW since 1980.
With clay and concrete tile spanning barrel, flat, low-profile, and mission profiles, the right choice comes down to your home’s architecture, framing, and budget. Here’s how we narrow it down on every Dallas tile consultation:

This is the first question StazOn answers before any tile estimate. Here’s the math:
How loading works for a tile roof:
Standard residential framing is designed for asphalt at 200-400 lbs per square. Clay tile at 600-1,000 lbs and concrete at 900-1,200 lbs are 3-5x heavier.
Mandatory. StazOn inspects the attic framing: rafter size, span length, spacing, collar ties, and load paths.
Mid-century and custom homes (Lakewood, Park Cities, Preston Hollow) were often built with heavier framing that accommodates tile.
1980s-2000s homes typically need reinforcement: sistered rafters, stronger connections, or engineered beams at ridge and load points.
DECRA steel tile at 150 lbs/sq is the answer when structural reinforcement isn't practical. Looks like tile, handles hail better.
New construction is the ideal time for tile — the framing can be designed for the load from the start. We never install tile on a roof that can’t carry the weight. Since 1980, we’ve turned down jobs when the structure didn’t support it — and referred those homeowners to DECRA instead.

Walking on tile roofs breaks tiles. A roofer who doesn’t know tile will cause more damage than they fix. Here’s how StazOn’s tile crews do it right:
Our tile repair process:
Specialized ladders hook over the ridge and distribute weight. Foam walking pads spread foot pressure so individual tiles don't crack.
A cracked tile is lifted with a tool that disengages it from the course below. The replacement slides in without disturbing neighbors. Under 5 minutes for an experienced roofer.
The underlayment wears out in 25-40 years — before the tiles do. This is a full roof restoration, not a repair. Tiles are numbered and mapped before removal.
Clay tile weathers over decades. StazOn sources from the original manufacturer when possible and blends replacements across the roof.
A single hail-damaged tile doesn't mean full replacement. We map every broken tile and swap individually. 30%+ broken = insurance covers full replacement.
StazOn handles the insurance claim from inspection to settlement — so a hailstorm doesn’t have to mean a full roof replacement unless it should.

StazOn Roofing really takes care of business. Most impressed with the rapid response for change orders/add ons. They crank out custom metal anything we used lots of flashings / door pans / chimney cap / etc… way beyond the roof. Best looking gutter job I have ever seen… same high quality material as roof. The roof just a work of art. Paul and Justin deliver high quality work and care about the customer. I don’t often recommend however these guys are a top notch organization so one must. Thanks You!!!! - JarrodPosted on Google Jessica MossDecember 11, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great service great people. Wonderful company!!! Easy to work with.Posted on Google Richie & Tasha KeeneAugust 21, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We've relied upon StazOn Roofing for help identifying/repairing a leak in our roof, and other minor repairs. Lewelen is always professional/courteous to work with in scheduling the work, and Raul shows up on-time, is efficient and the work he has performed is top-notch. StazOn will continue to be our go-to roofing expert!Posted on Google Daniel TossettiJuly 25, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We've worked with StazOn for nearly a decade between this house and our last house. They are always super professional, organized, and friendly. We decided to splurge and put a standing-seam metal roof on our mid-century-inspired house and I couldn't be more happy with the results. All of the pieces were custom-fabricated and the installation was smooth, clean, and executed with care. I highly recommend working with StazOn.Posted on Google Dave RandallJuly 21, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had StazOn roofing install a new roof on our house. The supervisor Justin showed up with his crew very early. Workers pretty much worked nonstop for close to 12 hours. From the time of Justin giving us the estimate things went well. He gave us the choice of materials to be used with no pressure I had already kind of decided on GAF Timberline HDZ shingles and StazOn highly recommended GAF. The warranty with the shingles was one of the best too. I am 80 and I have to say the transaction with this company has been very satisfying and pleasant. The workmanship was top notch and the cleanup was great.Posted on Google Peter B BartholowMay 20, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Person who made repairs on steep tile roof is extremely knowledgeable, careful and efficient. I would definitely recommend highly for either repairs or new roof installation. Paul is great to work with for timely response, logical approach to billing and help with different problems.Posted on Google Max LevyFebruary 23, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. As an architect it has become very difficult these days to find talented, dedicated, reliable subcontractors. StazOn on the other hand checks all these boxes. They not only routinely execute challenging design details well, they often make suggestions that actually improve the details. Additionally, I’ve rarely had a punchlist item for them to take care of on any of our projects. They are quite rare. Hire them!Posted on Google B Glazer RosenblattFebruary 21, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. They do beautiful work that is respectful of the historic architectual design of our home! They are also incredibly responsive and timely when it comes to any repairs. A joy to work with and reasonably priced!Posted on Google John PollockNovember 27, 2023Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very good company. I have used them twice in a 5 year period. Once on my old house (Full roof) and again on my new house which was a repair. They are honest, prompt to reply and ON TIME! Justin is a very solid guy and I strongly recommend this company.
FAQ
A: The tiles themselves need almost none. The underlayment underneath needs replacement every 25-40 years. Annual debris clearing from valleys and around penetrations prevents water backup. Every 5 years: professional inspection for cracked tiles, failed flashing sealant, and underlayment condition at the eaves. Call 214-466-1518.
A: Yes. Hail that cracks tiles is a covered peril in Texas. Wind that lifts and breaks tiles is covered. The insurance settlement for tile roofs is higher than shingle roofs because tile costs more to repair and replace. StazOn handles the entire claim process.
A: Tile is the best roofing material for Texas heat. The air gap between the tile and the roof deck acts as a thermal break. Attic temperatures under a tile roof run 20-30°F cooler than under asphalt shingles. This thermal performance is inherent to the tile system — no special coating required.
A: You shouldn’t. Tile roofs are not designed for foot traffic. StazOn’s tile crews use specialized equipment (ridge ladders, foam pads, tile roof brackets) to distribute weight safely. We recommend against homeowners walking on tile roofs — even for gutter cleaning or Christmas lights.
A: Both handle heat and hail well. Tile insulates better — the air gap under the tiles provides passive attic cooling that metal can’t match. Metal weighs less and handles hail without cracking (dents instead of breaks). The right choice depends on your home’s structure, architecture, and budget. StazOn installs both — we give you an honest comparison. Call 214-466-1518.
A: Yes — this is one of our most requested combinations. Clay barrel tiles paired with custom copper gutters, chimney caps, and scuppers from our in-house metal fabrication shop. Metal valleys, ridge caps, and flashing in copper or painted steel add definition against the tile profile.
